What’s All This Then?

Neon Splatter is about all sorts of nerdery. There will be posts about movies, books, toys, music, politics, art, pop culture, science, comics, comedy, and much more. My name is Rob Dean and, in the beginning, I will be the editor and main writer for most of these entries. So if you are not a fan of me…whoo boy did you pick the wrong website to check out.

The site will be updated every Monday through Friday with Daily Features and Weekly Recurring Features. There are guest writers already lined up and hopefully more contributors will come on board. There will be theme months and weeks, random posts, guest writers, and the occasional Very Special™Episode.

We’ll have videos and music made by me and other folks. There’ll be polls, chances for interaction, snozberries, and who knows what else. The dream is that this all morphs out of control AKIRA-style before collapsing in on itself and crushing at least one innocent high schooler.

Daily Features

  • Vocab For Cutie:
“Word-Of-The-Day” post where a new word is listed, defined, and illustrated to be used throughout your travels. (Optional: someone can scream “THAT‘S THE SPLATTER WORD OF THE DAY!” and generally freak out.

  • Afternoon Delights:
A short film, music video, episode, installment, compilation, video essay, or some sort of Audio-Visual piece that will break up of the monotony of daily life to provide some entertainment for the remainder of the day.

  • Quotent Quotables:
Something someone said at some time that may be inspirational, relatable, or other to help bring the day to a close.

Weekly Features

In addition to those daily features, these will appear every week on the following days…

  • Monday - Watching The Defectives:
Revisiting various pieces of art and entertainment that some failed miserably. What can we learn? What was good about it? Why do people constantly want talking animals in their films?

  • Tuesday - Discourse + Delusions:
Editorial where I go off on some tangent, theory, modest proposal, or expunging an opinion into the world at large.

  • Wednesday - I’ve Got Issues:
Looking back at the comic books of yesteryear. Some great. Some awful. But all worth a closer examination.

  • Wednesday - Added To Watchlist:
Guest writers recommend one (1) movie that people should check out. May be their favorite film, may be something they enjoy. It might be a total obscurity or it could be a mainstream success. In any case, they recommend you watch (or revisit) it.

  • Thursday - Lists Of Fury:
Who doesn’t love Listicles? Huh? Many people? Ruh-roh. Well this is a weekly and random list that covers all sorts of topics like “My Top 5 Best Guesses About The Abilities of Politoed, the Pokémon”, “The Many Times That Paula Pell Saved An Entire Show Or Movie”, and “Questions Arising From The Music Video For “I’ll Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”, and so much more.

  • Friday - My Mixtape’s A Masterpiece:
Guests will compile a 12-song playlist connected with whatever theme they choose. Maybe “The Best Mix From Summer Of ‘95”, “Soundtrack To An Alien RomCom That Never Existed”, “The Best Weezer B-Sides”, or whatever strikes their fancy! They pick the theme, match the songs, and then explain their choices…and you get to listen to the result.

  • Friday - Zelda Convention:
Title admittedly stolen from the Empress of Aesthetics, Erin Gaskill. Because this feature will have more Links than a Zelda Convention. It’s a round-up of trailers, memes, news stories, interviews, viral videos, and all sorts of oddities culled from the Internet.

A brand new announcement video for the site!

As time moves on, we’ll add contributors and pay for their services. There’ll be themed weeks and months with plenty of tie-in posts (hope you’re all ready for “Fred Olen May”!).

Reviews will be posted here for movies, home video, music, and anything else that strikes our fancy. Interested in contributing? Email me here and we can discuss. I’m especially looking for non-white, non-straight, non-cisgendered men—there needs to be greater amplification of voices of people that don’t look like me. Hopefully Neon Splatter can help with that.

This is my first fully functional website, so there may be some truly awkward hiccups and I beg for your patience. For example - this whole message was completely eradicated twice by accident. I hope you keep coming back as we will constantly grow and evolve. Tomorrow morning we kick off with some fancy words, and then it’s off to the races.

Set controls for the heart of the sun, something wicked this way comes…
