Marrowthon: Fish Out Of Water

For October, Added To Watchlist is being supplanted by daily posts about films to check out but also this feature—Marrowthon. Different contributors are tasked with organizing horror movie marathon made up of five titles, screening from dusk ‘til dawn. This week, Raul Benitez presents his 5-film “Fish Out Of Water” Marrowthon.

FILM 1 - CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA (1961)

I wanted to show the progression of these fish horror films—starting out with Roger Corman’s B-movie, CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA.

You can watch the full movie free on YouTube.

FILM 2 - ORCA (1977)

1977’s ORCA (aka ORCA THE KILLER WHALE) was more of a mainstream film than HAUNTED SEA, but has that B-movie aspect of trying to cash in on JAWS’ success.

You can get ORCA on Blu-ray from Scream Factory or rent/buy it digitally from these sites.

FILM 3 - CREATURES FROM THE ABYSS (1994) (aka PLANKTON)

With PLANKTON (aka CREATURES FROM THE ABYSS), I wanted a fun and goofy Italian-made aquatic horror that includes more than just fish terrorizing people.

You can watch the full movie free on YouTube.

FILM 4 - PIRANHA 3DD (2012)

PIRANHA 3DD, from genre darling John Gulager, is another fun pick with its trashy vibes and batshit plot developments.

You can stream PIRANHA 3DD for free (with ads) on Tubi or Pluto TV or rent/buy it digitally from multiple sites.

FILM 5 - THE SHALLOWS (2016)

And finally 2016’s THE SHALLOWS, which I feel more people should watch. It’s so good and really does the shark thing well, even after decades of other movies trying to find new spins on the same monster. It’s surprisingly gripping even in such well-worn territory. Going out on a high note!

THE SHALLOWS is available to stream/rent/buy from multiple sites.

You can find the line-up in this Letterboxd list if you wish to dive into Raul’s Marrowthon.
