“10 Years” by Daði Freyr
Eurovision is a big deal for a huge part of the planet. The annual singing competition brings in acts from all over Europe to compete for…vocal supremacy? I’m not exactly sure what the victory actually translates into. National pride, I guess? And winners got to be featured in that Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams movie. So.
For the past two years, Iceland’s Eurovision representative was Daði Freyr (Daði & Gagnamagnið). Well, they would’ve been the Iceland reps in 2020 with their song “Think About Things”, but the international event was canceled due to plague. Eurovision 2021 was still held though (suck it, Delta variant!), and Daði Freyr were back at it with “10 Years”. Both songs are fun bops, but “10 Years” is a great blend of early Phoenix’s booty shakin’ ditties. Ultimately Iceland placed fourth in the competition which—having listened to the three other songs that placed higher—is bullshit.
I want to go on the record and state that the Italian entry (“Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin), which ultimately won Eurovision 2021, is trash. Raise your standards, Europe; you once gave us ABBA, existentialism, and METROPOLIS. Now this? Get your shit together.
In any case, watch Daði Freyr’s official music video for “10 Years” which features fun DIY costuming, sweet dance moves, and a mecha fighting a delightfully goofy Kaiju.
