“Remake Of The NBC Miniseries ‘The Slap’”

Does the “Remake Of The NBC Miniseries The Slap” work for most people that don’t know about its origins? In order to appreciate this ~4 minute slice of comedy, do you need to remember The Slap? I don’t think you do as the set-up below is clear about tensions of a group of adults spilling over into another group, but patently absurd with its changes.

But, for the curious, The Slap was a 2015 miniseries on NBC, which was based on the 2011 Australian miniseries called The Slap, which itself was based on the 2008 book by Christos Tsiolkas called The Slap. The NBC version was eight episodes, featured impressive actors like Thandie Newton, Zachary Quinto, Uma Thurman, Peter Sarsgaard, and even a very classy narration by Victor Garber (the man who originated the role of John Wilkes Booth in Sondheim’s Assassins! Eeeeee!).

A group of parents with little in common are hanging out when a kerfuffle happens and the people respond…responses which will reverberate throughout this little community. Not really, but it’s an interesting idea how one act can lead to a bunch of branching discussions, ideas, and reactions. It’s silly, but fun in a ponderous fiction/philosophical manner.

THIS version of The Slap, however, is much funnier and less about the interconnectedness of cause and effect, identity, and so on. Directed Daniel J. Clark and written by Joe Kwaczala, this remake of the 2015 remake of the 2011 adaptation of the 2008 book makes one subtle change that turns the whole situation into just a big ole ball of giggles. Watch and guess what is different from the previous versions of The Slap!
