Amoeba’s “What’s In My Bag?” with Matt Berry
California-based Amoeba Music (with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkeley) has a fun recurring video series on their YouTube channel. “What’s In My Bag?” asks celebrity patrons to pick a few items from the store and then discuss why they chose those particular albums, movies, and whatnot. It helps Amoeba tout their wide selection and artistic knowledge while also allowing the various people in the spotlight to showcase their tastes, blindspots, and more. Win/win!
This week’s bagadier is international icon Matt Berry from The Mighty Boosh, What We Do In The Shadows, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Snuff Box, The IT Crowd…just a shit ton of British humor things but now also some American tomfoolery as well. Berry has always brought musical elements to all of his comedic performances, he also has released multiple albums that span a pretty wide collection of genres with all of the songs being powered by his tremendous singing. The musical merrymaker has selected a few vinyl records at the L.A. location—including new reissues, copies of discs he lost long ago, and the latest albums from bands he loves. It’s a fun overview of different musical acts, decades, sub-genres, and more, that’s also bolstered with some fun commentary by Berry. His point about how realizing when a particular album came out can immediately make you feel your true age is particularly devastating. There’s certainly those discs that feel like they came out last year but was over a decade ago…and then you turn into that aged skeleton from the end of INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE.
Be sure to subscribe to Amoeba’s YouTube channel and follow them on Twitter and on Instagram. And definitely check out some of the music Berry selected to see how it jives with your sensibilities.
