Bee And Puppycat (Episode 1)
Yes, Bee And Puppycat first started hitting the interwebs nine years ago, but the 2013 animated adventures of a young adult and her ambiguously specied compatriot remains incredibly fun and utterly timeless. Created by Natasha Allegri—who has worked on Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors, and Over The Garden Wall, amongst others—the Cartoon Hangover series is an amalgam of influences that collide to produce something wholly unique and incredibly inventive.
Bee And Puppycat’s influences in subject matter, characterization, and design appear to be Scott Pilgrim, anime, Adventure Time, Heavy Metal, The Little Prince, and more. But these disparate sources never feel discordant when synthesized together into a tale of a sassy slacker who ends up roped into various adventures fantastical and impossible. It also feels like a precursor to later works like Steven Universe and The Midnight Gospel through its blending of the epic with real world problems, while using characters as the springboard for the storytelling (and revealing more about each character through their adventures).
And like all of the previously mentioned titles, it also is hard to discern exactly what age group it’s aimed at, but never feels too immature or too adult—again finding that sweet spot between the mundane and heightened that appeals to anyone whose imagination continues to thrive.
Most of the previous episodes of Bee And Puppycat can be found on YouTube. Allegri’s show is also slated to be on Netflix later this year (2022).
