Freakies Cereal Commercials

We used to be a real country. Back in the ‘70s, we had bizarre breakfast cereals like Freakies, with a whole cast of characters and marketing blitz. Made by Ralston, Freakies was on supermarket shelves from 1972 to 1976. Then it was discontinued, until they tried to bring it back in 1986…but that didn’t work out and it was canceled again. Thanks again, President Reagan!

As mentioned, the cereal actually had a cast of characters featured in their commercials and on the box. These corresponded with the sugary pieces of the cereal and their respective colors. They were:

  • BossMoss (dark green)

  • Snorkledorf (blue)

  • Hamhose (light brown)

  • Grumble (orange)

  • Cowmumble (light green)

  • Gargle (purple)

  • Goody Goody (pink)

Lost to time like tears in the rain, Freakies have disappeared from most pop culture consciousness—though they were oddly featured a bit in 1989’s THE ‘BURBS. So…that happened. Here’s a compilation of the original commercials:

And from the unsuccessful relaunch:
