Käärijä, “Cha Cha Cha” (Eurovision 2023)

Eurovision 2023 concluded yesterday in all the spectacular and confusing pageantry for which the international contest has become known. There were some great songs and some aggressively mediocre ones. There was an ode to Edgar Allen Poe (?). There was history as Loreen became the first woman to win Eurovision twice. There were unfortunate Beatles’ covers. It had everything!

But the act that most online folks seemed enthralled by was Finland’s Käärijä performing “Cha Cha Cha.” Personally, it felt like Eurovision MadLibs to me with various pastiches of past performers superglued together in hopes of Voltron-ing a win. But that’s just me! Here’s the final national performance (before heading to the UK for the international showdown) and much of the choreography and costumery stayed the same. What do YOU think of Käärijä? Is “Cha Cha Cha” a certified bop?
