LOGAN LEE & THE RISE OF THE PURPLE DAWN (2020)
Writer/director Raymond C. Lai crafted a truly fun and unique blend of horror, comedy, sci-fi, music, and marijuana all in less than nine minutes. LOGAN LEE & THE RISE OF THE PURPLE DAWN is a delightful short starring Osric Chau, Nikki SooHoo, Karen Maruyama, and Luke Guldan. Lai and producer Laura Allen take some familiar aspects of past genre stories but puts in clever twists, even incorporating the moves of a scratch DJ as a framing device to divide up the tale. The music is terrific—at first I was thinking “this sounds a lot like what Kid Koala did on Deltron 3030 and Lovage”…but in fact it was Dan The Automator—who produced and starred on those albums as well (on top of many, many other ones). It’s a joyful short that has good jokes and nice grooves and is the type of inspired romp that will hopefully lead to more work for the filmmakers as well as get friends to make their own oddball short film.
The plot summary of LOGAN LEE & THE RISE OF THE PURPLE DAWN is as follows:
It's the night of the Hungry Ghost Festival, and Chinese-American scratch DJ Logan Lee is poised to make his live debut at his best friend Beatrice Pan's house party. The problem is, he's a nervous wreck.
