Michael Giacchino’s “Roar!” from CLOVERFIELD

Given its found footage nature, it’s fair that most people don’t know there was actually a piece of original score written for CLOVERFIELD. “Roar!”, composed by Michael Giacchino, plays over the end credits and hasn’t really been heard by many, particularly outside of that usage; yet, anyways—even parts of SUNSHINE’s score has been used in movie trailers recently, so “Roar!” may soon find a second life by being featured somewhere else.

Beyond Giacchino’s obvious skills writing new compositions (not to mention a maker of his own kaiju film), the maestro has shown an impressive ability to create musical pieces that evoke other composers. These “done in the style of” type scores don’t recycle their well-known tunes but instead sound like b-sides or unused pieces that could have easily been delivered by the likes of John Williams or others. For CLOVERFIELD, “Roar!” is a tremendously successful mutation of a GODZILLA-like theme that uses martial rhythms and percussion, alternating soft and loud movements. Please check it out!
