‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Showrunners

The TV show What We Do In The Shadows shouldn’t work. A spin-off/quasi-adaptation of an odd horror comedy mockumentary from New Zealand, populated by lesser known actors (at least in the U.S.), set in a farcical, ornate realm of vampires. Seems like a hard pitch…and yet the show is absolutely brilliant with terrific worldbuilding and tremendous chemistry between all the actors. The characters play off each other perfectly while creating hilarious new misadventures and expanding into avenues of folklore.

A lot of this is due to the showrunners of What We Do In The Shadows, Stefani Robinson and Paul Simms. In a recent video, they sat down with Variety to discuss their process, origins of the characters, development of narrative arcs, and more.

As the video summary states:

“This is all really fun,” said Stefani Robinson, reflecting back on her career. “Making vampire dick jokes, are you joking me?”

The fourth season of FX’s vampire comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” will premiere on July 12, but before that, showrunners Robinson and Paul Simms delved into the characters’ Season 3 tribulations: Namely, the existential crisis faced by Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and the death and rebirth of energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch).

Enjoy the video and, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out What We Do In The Shadows on Hulu. You’ll thank me later. BAT!
