Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Alexis M. Collazo: BLOOD RED SKY (2021)

What It Is: A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. In order to protect her son she will have to reveal a dark secret, and unleash the inner monster she has fought to hide.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “Dominic Purcell, an airplane hijacking, and a vampire. That’s all I needed to know to instantly hit play and I was not disappointed. From the beginning to end this movie is suspenseful, action packed, and horrifically satisfying.”

Khayla McGowan: My Hero Academia (2016—)

What It Is: In a world populated with superhumans, the superhero-loving Izuku Midoriya is without power. However, after the Quirkless dreamer Izuku inherits the powers of the world's best superhero, All Might, his hopes of becoming the top hero are now possible. Once enrolled in the high school for heroes, U.A., Izuku soon discovers being a hero is much more complicated than it appears.

Where It Is: Hulu, Funimation

Why You Should Watch It: “I'm all about an underdog story and this anime oozes that through every line of dialogue. I truly love both the dubbed and subbed versions of this and have watched it multiple times without any boring moments. Cannot recommend this one enough, especially for anyone starting anime for the first time!”

Jeremy Lowe: FREAKS (2018)

What It Is: Kept locked inside the house by her father, 7-year-old Chloe lives in fear and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat—or so she believes. When a mysterious stranger offers her a glimpse of what's really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn't so simple, the danger is very real.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “In this time of fear and paranoia, FREAKS is a masterpiece of genre film making. Combine part Stephen King with part Guillermo del Toro and you get this fantastical movie with superhumans controlling time and space.”

Rob Dean:  HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN (1991)

What It Is: The tough biker Harley and his no less tough cowboy friend Marlboro learn that an old friend of theirs will lose his bar, because a bank wants to build a new complex there and demands 2.5 million dollars for a new contract in advance. Harley and Marlboro decide to help him by robbing the corrupt bank. They rob the Bank transport and get hold of an amount of a new synthetic drug. Now they are targeted by criminal bankers.

Where It Is: HBO Max

Why You Should Watch It: “Simon Wincer’s film is certainly flawed in some outsized and failed comedy, muddled messaging, and a few lulls. BUT it’s still a fun, wonky look into the near future that feels like a combo of JOHNNY MNEMONIC and ROAD HOUSE filtered through the usual insanity that only early ‘90s action movies can supply.”

Shafi Malik: Yung Singh | Daytimers - Boiler Room DJ Set (2021)

What It Is: London's finally open. We've invited four of the city's best to welcome us back into the dance. Breakout UKG revivalist Yung Singh introduces South Asian collective, Daytimers, on August 5.

Where It Is: YouTube

Why You Should Watch It: “Even though this DJ set only took place last year, it has gained a ‘legendary’ reputation and will be for years to come. South Asian DJ-collective The Daytimers provided Boiler Room with their first outdoor night after a 16-month hiatus. You can feel the manic energy and good vibes from the crowd as Yung Singh tears the decks up with tune after tune mixing Bhangra, Breakbeat, and UKG. For those that are still anxious about going out to clubs, just play this at home and enjoy the euphoria. It’s unlike any other Boiler Room set you will ever see.”
