Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Khayla McGowan: Wynonna Earp (2016 - 2021)

What It Is: Follows the great great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she's the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “If someone asked me what’s my favorite show of all time, I'd say Wynonna Earp is a strong contender. Perfectly fusing sci-fi, action, comedy, romance, pretty much any category you can think of, this show truly had it all while passing the Bechdel Test! I love the relationship between the titular character and her sister, I love the romantic relationships between the characters, and the wisecracks and action are among the best I've seen out of a show that aired on SyFy. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a show that just happens to continue the Wyatt Earp story with extra bells and whistles.”

Jeremy Lowe: TITANE (2021)

What It Is: With a titanium plate surgically fused to her skull following a car crash as a child, car model Alexia embarks on a wild and ultimately unpredictable journey that questions our assumptions about family, identity and love.

Where It Is: Hulu

Why You Should Watch It: “A movie that leaves me thinking about it for days—if not weeks—after watching it is my favorite kind of movie, and that's exactly what TITANE is. I honestly didn't know much about it when I started watching it, but I love director Julius Ducournau's previous film RAW (2016), and I heard nothing but good things about this one. TITANE is an extremely intense mind-melting body horror that defies simple explanation. An exploration into gender and sexuality that needs to be seen.”

Kiley Fox: Max Headroom (1987-1988)

What It Is: 20 minutes into the future, the world has become imbued with network-television. It's illegal to turn off your TV and televisions are given to the needy. Network 23’s roving reporter Edison Carter uncovers a plot to cover up lethal "blipverts" and is almost killed himself. In the process his mind is copied into a computer and the computer-generated personality "Max Headroom" is born. Together, Max and Carter—along with Carter's controller, their boss, and Network 23's boy-genius—combat crime, placate sponsors, defeat rival networks, and turn in stories.

Where It Is: Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: “If you watched The Sci-Fi Channel in the ‘90s (before it became SyFy), then you'll probably love this series. It stars the great Matt Frewer and feels as if ROBOCOP and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK had a TV baby.”

Rob Dean: STARFISH (2019)

What It Is: Following the death of her best friend, Aubrey is stricken with grief and seemingly alone on what may be the day the world ends. Trapped in her dead best friend's apartment, her only clue is a tape left behind, labeled THIS MIXTAPE WILL SAVE THE WORLD. Aubrey ventures out to solve the mystery, as her reality becomes increasingly frayed.

Where It Is: Shudder and Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: “A hauntingly beautiful meditation on loss and love that involves weird monsters and an unraveling reality, the excellent STARFISH is buoyed by a tremendous performance by lead Virginia Gardner and an outstanding score by writer/director A.T. White.”

Shafi Malik: Anik Khan, Denied (2021)

What It Is: Denied explores Khan’s life as he was denied U.S. citizenship and feeling invisible. Rapidly gaining popularity, Denied was a fan favorite with the lyrics being a testament to the disappointments and rejections Khan has faced in the United States as an immigrant and as an artist.

Where It Is: Spotify and YouTube

Why You Should Listen To It: “Bangladeshi-American rapper's EP based around being denied US citizenship and gives an honest look on the immigration experience. Providing bangin' beats and poignant lyrics, it's what the Hip-Hop soundscape needs right now—music that comes from an honest and personal place.”
