Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Khayla McGowan: The Magicians (2015 - 2020)

What It Is: After being recruited to a secretive academy, a group of students discover that the magic they read about as children is very real, and more dangerous than they ever imagined. But, will getting hooked on the thrill of magic distract them from honing their powers when they need them most?

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “I love magic, fantasy, romance, and drama and this show has them all in addition to elements of my favorite genre—horror! This show pulls influence from Canadian and British television and properly builds the world and characters slowly while giving punchy weekly plots that the best of American television does so well and I've thoroughly enjoyed my binge sessions of it. Please give this one a watch—it lasted five seasons for a reason!”

Jeremy Lowe: THE DOMESTICS (2018)

What It Is: In the weeks following an apocalyptic event, a husband and wife venture across the countryside inhabited by deadly factions in search of safety, and must work together as they are pushed to the breaking point in order to survive.

Where It Is: Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: THE DOMESTICS is set in a post-apocalyptic world similar to The Walking Dead…without zombies. Think THE WARRIORS meets DOOMSDAY. It's brutal, political, deliberate with a feminist subtext. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!”

Rob Dean:  BEYOND THE INFINITE TWO MINUTES (2020)

What It Is: Cafe owner Kato lives right above his cafe. Suddenly he gets a message from himself. He learns that the TV screen in his cafe is two minutes ahead of time. When his friends discover this, they play around with it. But they get into trouble when they use the TV to get their hands on some money.

Where It Is: Amazon Prime

Why You Should Watch It: “A big festival hit from 2020, this wildly inventive film is from an improv troupe in Japan. It shows how passion and intelligence can make for a great movie, no matter the limitations. It’s funny, smart, touching, and utterly unique.”

Alexis Collazo: Wynonna Earp (2016 - 2021)

What It Is: Following Wyatt Earp's great great-granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she's the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “I love that Wynona can be a demon killing bad ass and hard drinking hot mess. Her friends and family are just as entertaining as they help or hinder on her heroic quests. Bonus points for the chaotic on again, off again relationship with eye candy Doc Holiday (Tim Rozon).”

Kiley Fox: Komi Can’t Communicate (2021 - )

What It Is: An elite and aloof schoolgirl is in fact severely withdrawn and anxious about communicating with others. An ordinary schoolboy befriends her and helps her to open up and talk with people.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “I'm watching this series with both of my kids, ages 8 and 14. They both love it. We're a family of introverts with social anxiety so we relate to this show. The deeper in you get, the more rewarding it is. It is kind of a slow burn, but worth it. I love slice-of-life anime.”
