Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Kiley Fox: JFF+ Independent Cinema

What It Is: The Japan Foundation (JF) is excited to launch a new program, JFF+ INDEPENDENT CINEMA. This is a free online streaming program that features 12 Japanese independent films selected by managers from independent theaters, so-called “mini-theaters” throughout Japan. Mini-theaters have nurtured the diversity of the Japanese cinema culture and brought it up to the current state.

Where It Is: Festival’s Website

Why You Should Watch It: “The second wave of films have dropped from JFF (Japanese Film Festival)! I am so excited. SHIVER (2021) is a music film about a taiko troupe. I love this style of music, and the film itself is gorgeous. Even if you aren't familiar with the music genre, the film is exhilarating and beautiful while being a small peek into the heart of being Japanese.”

Khayla McGowan: THE WOMAN KING (2022)

What It Is: A historical epic inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “This film got snubbed at the Oscars this year, but that doesn't mean you should pass it up. I love Viola Davis and Lashana Lynch is an amazing breakthrough actress that shines in this movie alongside a stellar cast. Although the historian in me weeps over the inaccuracies, this tale is worth watching for the epic it unleashes on your screen.”

Alexis M. Collazo: GLOW (2017 - 2019)

What It Is: A look at the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “One of the funniest shows I've watched in quite some time. Being loosely based on the ‘80s women's wrestling industry, it might be a fun nostalgic treat for old school fans.”

Jeremy Lowe: ALIENS, CLOWNS, AND GEEKS (2019)

What It Is: Out-of-work actor stumbles upon key to the universe, is drawn into intergalactic war between clowns and aliens.

Where It Is: Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: “You had me at ‘from the creators of FORBIDDEN ZONE.’ ALIENS, CLOWNS, AND GEEKS is a wacky genre film from the insane mind of filmmaker Richard Elfman, that needs to be seen to be believed. Sure, everyone knows Danny Elfman, but familiarize yourself with his brother Richard and you can thank me later. This sci-fi comedy is held together by paper clips and bubble gum, but thanks to a top notch score and incredible cast, ALIENS, CLOWNS, AND GEEKS is definitely worth a watch. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!”
