“More links than a Zelda Convention…” - Erin B. Gaskill
E3 was this week and iO9 has a round-up of some of the best (well, nerdiest anyways) announcements thus far.
Neon Splatter contributor and all around righteous dude Jeremy Lowe wrote a piece for Gayly Dreadful’s Pride 2021 series that examines how the 1990 Clive Barker film NIGHTBREED helped him put words to his outsider feelings and empower him to embrace his own truth.
Apologies for the dip into more serious fare, but there hasn’t been much coverage or discussion about a situation in Minneapolis where a white dude drove into a crowd of protestors (who were protesting U.S. Marshals shooting a Black man). The driver killed one person and injured two others, with his defense being he was drunk at the time. A reason why this is such an inflammatory incident is that the initial police reaction to the events were to blame the protestors for being there in the first place. Please read more about this underreported story.
I have no idea what the upcoming Nicolas Cage film PIG is about, but I cannot wait to find out on July 16.
Over at Daily Grindhouse, Preston Fassel explains how Stephen King’s Christine (and John Carpenter’s film adaptation) is an oddly prescient parable for our times.
Mary Beth McAndrews writes at Film School Rejects about early 21st century found footage monster movies and what they say about disaster striking very close to home.
There was an epic Twitter thread that unfolded yesterday as a losing fantasy football season led a man to spend almost 24 hours in a Waffle House occasionally consuming waffles in order to shave time off his punishment. It is hilarious, brutal, and a true ode to the triumph of the human spirit. (it’s also very similar to that one episode of Review)
Shameless Self Promotion Time!!!
With the second episode of Loki hitting Disney+, please revisit my review of the first two entries and where I think the series is headed.
My review of THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD finds a fairly flimsy film with some fun moments that mostly come from a bombastic performance by Salma Hayek.
The new Kevin Hart movie on Netflix, FATHERHOOD, is exactly what you expect it to be. If that sounds pleasant and enjoyable, it probably will be. If not, best to avoid.
@captainmcslugs Let’s not go to Camelot. It’s a silly place. #montypython #accordion #medieval #knight #darksouls

Severin Film’s “Nukes the Mid Year Sale” is coming Midnight EST Friday 6/25 through 11:59:59 PM PST Monday 6/28. There’s some great Italian post-apocalyptic titles and that kooky Andy Warhol Dracula movie. But to learn about pricing and how everything works, check out this policy page beforehand. (And prepare for the site crashing a bit at first)
Rucking Fotten just launched their new wardrobes based on CRY BABY (and there’s still clothes based on other films, too). Check it all out and grab them while you can!
Ahead of the observation of Juneteenth tomorrow (June 19), filmmaker Nia DaCosta looks at the various ways her new take on CANDYMAN intersects with multiple narratives, histories, and societal issues that have often been overlooked by far too many in the United States.
Lastly, I’ve been desperately searching for this clip for 11 years and finally tracked it down. I first saw it on The Soup (the version hosted by Joel McHale) in and it has stayed in my brain ever since, often emerging as I quote it at people who have no clue what the hell I’m babbling about. From the Jim Wynorski/Roger Corman 2010 masterpiece DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR, I present one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. I present…Jerry The Pool Guy:
