Is Stephen King Our Charles Dickens?
A prolific writer who is often looked down upon by elites but wildly popular with the masses has churned out some forgettable pieces but also all time classic stories and characters that will are revisited multiple times over the years. Am I talking about Stephen King or Charles Dickens? Inverse put out this video in 2018 about how King’s literary career is most analogous to the writing life of Dickens (since then, there have been multiple more books and adaptations to only further cement the profuse nature of King’s legacy).
King is arguably better regarded by critics and other intelligentsia than Dickens ever was, probably because he’s been around for almost twice as long as Dickens was an active writer.
The summary of the 2018 video reads:
Including Castle Rock, Stephen King has been the mind behind 104 separate TV shows and movies. In his 45-year writing career, King has been more than prolific, but his critics are plentiful. People deride King for churning books out or just adding "haunted" to a noun and sending it to his editor, but he's much more than that. For one thing, he seems to have an uncanny knack for drilling straight to a reader's subconscious.
