ITYSL - “The Night Scrooge Saved Christmas”

I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson is a delightful halfway point between absurdist sketch comedy and anti-comedy cringe, resulting in an oddly relatable if completely bizarre series that I revisit multiple times. Bringing in his friends from comedy (including those from his days on Saturday Night Live and Detroit) allows for a myriad of different styles to play together in a way that is dynamically new but somehow still comfortingly familiar. At the heart of almost every ITYSL sketch is the relatable instance of being incredibly awkward and being faced with social etiquette that either you’re unaware of or simply terrified of breaking.

One of the most random sketches is from episode four of the first season, in which Ebenezer Scrooge wakes up on Christmas morning a changed man…only to meet a cyberwarrior from the way, way future who enlists the (formerly) miserly rich man to help fight a horrifying threat in the future. Using retro-filters to make it look like a scene from an ‘80s TV movie of the week, it actually seems like it could’ve been something that people had created back in the day (except for the CGI villains that pop up). If Rambo can help Santa, and the North Pole brigade can conquer the Martians, it’s not particularly hard to imagine an action-sci-fi genre blend that merges with the well-known story of A Christmas Carol (which just so happens to also be in the public domain).

Enjoy and remember to remain vigilant against those bonies!
