Matt Talbot’s Archie-fied Horror

It’s always amazing the synthesis that artists create when they combine two of their passions. As I discovered via Broke Horror Fan, Matt Talbot has a new exhibit at Gallery 1988 where he takes famous horror films and characters and depicts them in the style of Archie comics. The aesthetic of Archie co-creator Bob Montana is incredibly distinct (even if it was partially co-opted by Hanna-Barbera cartoons in the ‘70s) and Talbot perfectly recreates the look and feel of these comics that began in 1941.

The show offers buttons (see above), lunchboxes, and many prints. Unfortunately the lunchboxes are all sold out, but they are still worth checking out due to how incredibly dope each one is in its homage to both the comics and the horror movie itself. Here are a few:

The New Hampshire-based artist also has prints with many being extended versions of the lunchbox covers, but other titles as well. They are tremendously vivid in color and comedy, while also belying a sincere appreciation that Talbot clearly has for both art forms and genres.

And there are so many more prints available at Gallery 1988’s website. Check them out, buy one or three, and help support a great artist (and a great art gallery).
