Neon Lights in Movies

Sometimes days are such that it’s simply nice to watch cool looking shit with beautiful colors compiled together with a dope song. Today is one of those days, and have I got the video for you.

Two years ago, the Tolgs Çınar channel put together a brief four minute mash-up (set to music by Cliff Martinez and Julian Winding from THE NEON DEMON) of some great uses of stark neon lighting in film. It is far from an exhaustive collection of such cinematic moments utilizing these gorgeously engaging lighting set ups, but it is still an aesthetically pleasing combo of bright purples, pinks, blues, reds, greens, and much more that bleed chrome with every pixel.

It’s a joke now that neon lighting (especially bisexual lighting) is basically enough for people to elevate some titles to “Pure Cinema”. That’s certainly hyperbole, but the inclusion of these color palettes does show effort and interest in crafting striking images. Even if the movie isn’t great (sorry, ATOMIC BLONDE - you have great moments though!), at least these artistic choices provide for a few moments of visual decadence.

Follow the Turkish YouTuber on Letterboxd and be sure to subscribe to their channel, too. Now let the cascade of bright, neon bisexual lighting transport you to a simpler time in a better world…if only for four minutes.
