Older Lady Plays Disturbed

Videos like this, where the gist is “appearances can be deceiving!”, basically work on two levels. On the one hand, since you know the twist is coming (in this case, someone who appears to be a sweet older lady busts out proficient drumming to a Nu Metal song), then you’re just watching for others’ reactions. But it also basically affirms your own biases to see the person defy the preconceived expectations you already have. The best example of this is on those singing competitions where beautiful pop stars are always blown away when a song is performed well by some homely or chubby contestant. It’s meant to be supportive in the moment, but it’s fairly condescending in the abstract.

So with that said, get down with the disparity as you watch “The Godmother of Drumming” Dorothea Taylor perfectly execute the drum parts of the song “Down With The Sickness” by Disturbed. Jamming out to this 2000 classic (?), Taylor reveals not only an impressive talent with the sticks but also our own prejudices within. But seriously, it’s an excellent performance and super fun to see Taylor mock the stereotypes she encounters in days as an unexpectedly badass drummer.
