Pink Project, “Disco Project”
In 1982, there came an Italian group that kind of created one of the first mashups (or at least one of the earliest examples of them). Italian DJ/keyboardist/producer Stefano Pulga and guitarist Luciano Ninzatti noticed that Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2” had the same tempo as The Alan Parsons Project’s “Mammagamma.” So they combined the two (working with Ellade Bandini on Drums and Pier Michelatti on bass). The new song, “Disco Project” was a hit in some parts of Europe, which led to the below appearance on a TV program (the names seem German, but could be Swiss as “Disco Project” was big there.
But the group wanted to remain anonymous, so they put on these black robes with some rainbow inseams and took to the airwaves. Since there was a weird enigmatic nature to them, plus Ninzatti’s amazing job copying David Gilmour’s guitar work, there was some speculation that it was actually Pink Floyd (or some amalgamation involving members of Floyd) in those robes and performing this proto-mashup. It’s a fairly entertaining bit with some impressive musicianship and oddball theatrics. Enjoy!
