Remembering Kevin Conroy

A lot happens in a year. It’s easy for certain events to be pushed away from the spotlight or even our memories. Watching those wrap up retrospectives, how often do we mutter to ourselves “that was THIS year”? But one moment has stuck with me, refusing to budge no matter what else occurs in 2022: the death of Kevin Conroy.

The voice of Batman in video games and animated fare, Conroy was THE Batman for many people, myself included. But who was Kevin Conroy and how did his life inform his performance? Matt Baume looks at the Juliard-trained actor and the many parallels between his experiences and those of Batman/Bruce Wayne. It goes beyond just the duality of Conroy being publicly closeted for many years and examines the manner in which a rough childhood and trauma helped shape an incredible human being.
