THE PISTOL SHRIMPS (2016)

The Pistol Shrimps was a recreational basketball team in Los Angeles with players from the world of entertainment. Made up of actors, musicians, writers, comedians, models, and even a media lawyer or two, these women found a new sense of camaraderie and community by trying their awkward hands at basketball. Some used to play the game back in the day while others have only a passing knowledge of the James Naismith’s sweet sport.

The excitement generated by this team led to an explosion of a whole women’s recreational basketball league in the L.A. area. The Pistol Shrimps themselves were buoyed into higher profile thanks to their famous players, including Aubrey Plaza, and a podcast that offered play-by-play coverage of every game by two men whose grasp on athletics is tenuous at best.

In 2016, director Brent Hodge made a documentary (titled simply THE PISTOL SHRIMPS) about the rise of this hoop dream and the women that fueled it. Here’s the trailer:
