The NOPE Hype Train Begins
NOPE was already a highly anticipated film of 2022 as it’s from writer/director Jordan Peele. True, not everything Peele has done as a producer has been solid (looking at you, new Twilight Zone). But he’s two for two in movies that he’s written and directed. Though I know people were torn on US, I still think it’s an incredible bit of art that does create more questions than answers but that’s kind of great despite the Internet’s insistence on pedantry and focus on plot contrivances.
(I have a long-in-gestation video essay about US that I hope to finally complete this summer. Less of a tease and more of a way to hold myself accountable to finally finish it)
But the hype train for Peele’s latest movie is starting in earnest. First there was the poster and the date announcement of its premiere on July 22, 2022.
And today Monkeypaw Productions and Universal released a video to remind folks of the indelible imagery, moments, and inventive ideas of Peele’s previous works while providing the first glimpses of NOPE (including its starts Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun). Watch that teaser/hype reel below:
Here’s some of the new shots from NOPE that’s included in the teaser:
And there will be a new trailer (or teaser, it’s hard to tell how people define these things these days) showing up during the Super Bowl this Sunday.
Lastly, the studios launched the official website for the movie along with accounts for NOPE across social media (and its official hashtag #NOPEMOVIE), for those interested in following such things:
Of course, it’s always dangerous to get excited for new art. While cynical to go in with lower (or no) expectations to avoid being disappointed, it’s near impossible not be intrigued by the possibility of some new bizarre yet ultimately engaging (and incredibly human) genre film that Peele delivers in theaters. Of course, that’s barring any new plague. C’mon, NOPE—our nation turns its lonely eyes to you!
