For the L.A. Times, Jen Yamato (a literal personal hero of mine) sat down to discuss what it means professionally and personally to enter into the massive spotlight that is the MCU as Asian-American actors with Awkwafina (SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS) and Kumail Nanjiani (ETERNALS).
Jordan Hoffman speaks with Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson over at Polygon about all manner of stuff, but principally the band’s new album, Senjutsu (out today), and their new, ridiculously epic music video for the song “The Writing On The Wall”. (it’s a really dope video that’s embedded in the interview)
Unstoppable force of editorial and authorial wonder that makes us all look bad (and friend of the site) Heather Wixson has a new book coming out that you can pre-order right now. It’s the first volume in a larger series featuring conversations/interviews with some of the biggest names in make-up f/x for horror. So pre-order it now. DO IT. Stop dicking around and just DO IT already.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities promises a macabre mashup of genre-defining horror. Here are the cast and creators chosen by @RealGDT to bring these eight episodes to life ⬇️⬇️⬇️

When the penalty for aborting after rape is more severe than the penalty for rape, that's when you know it's a war on women.

Please read my review of WORTH.
That’s all I got. Listen to GOONIES: THE MUSICAL again? I dunno.
Please consider giving to Save Our Snopes - fundraiser to help keep Snopes, the Internet’s fact-checker, afloat. Who else will assure you there is no proof that the woman we call “Avril Lavigne” isn’t some Canadian fembot unleashed upon the death of the original, actual Avril Lavigne? AltaVista? Cuz I don’t think they exist anymore. But seriously, it can disarm many an easily misinformed relative.
Mondo is releasing the score for BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA on vinyl and it looks toit. Plus it’s a dope soundtrack. Check it out!
This NPR interview with Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer is almost a year old, but maybe it can help bridge the gap as we wait for more news from HBO Max about their Venture Bros. film (also there’s alllll sorts of rumors going around about how Hulu may have fucked over a few Adult Swim shows in retaliation for HBO Max).
Do you like horror? Do you like music? Do you like good horror music? Then check out Ben Living, an impressive musician that takes sounds from beloved horror movies (pieces of dialogue, score, sound f/x, etc.) and then creates a great sort of ambient techno dread mix from them. His entire digital discography is 35% off this weekend on Bandcamp. You can hear some of his work on Spotify and on his Instagram. I think you’ll dig it.

There is so much a-doings transpirin’ over at Vinegar Syndrome.
They have a new partner label, Terror Vision Films, which will be putting out a bunch of cool shit very soon, starting with WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (which is a must-watch if you haven’t seen it yet).
They just established a production arm of the company, Vinegar Syndrome Pictures (VSP), which “is a fresh sub-branding dedicated specifically to the production and distribution of carefully curated, often daring, first fun, genre-based feature films exclusively photographed on motion picture film.”
AND they also announced September’s package of great genre Blus.

News finally came out about Fantastic Fest and it seems this year will be…even more different than it was previously going to be. No badges (just ticketing). Multiple locations. And some other changes. I don’t know if I’ll be attending in person (probably only if I’m covering it) or just doing the @Home thing. But this all feels like a bunch of odd compromises which is quite unfortunate.
Finally: I learned about King Frederick and the insane lengths of reverse psychology that he had to go to in order to trick his people from not starving and eat potatoes…so now YOU’VE got to learn about King Frederick and the insane lengths of reverse psychology that he had to go to in order to trick his people from not starving and eat potatoes (it’s legitimately fascinating).

Listen below to the Halloweenies podcast’s two-part episode on SCREAM 3. I’m surprised this one hasn’t gotten some form of contrarian reappraisal yet, but I suppose we just need to give it more time.
