The Velvet Underground Doc Rises Oct 15
Todd Haynes’ documentary on The Velvet Underground has a new trailer and release date! The Velvet Underground is one of my favorite bands of all time with a ridiculously impressive catalogue that was all way ahead of its time. I’m curious to see how the various interpersonal issues will be covered (Lou Reed’s egotism essentially leading to his departure, Mo Tucker as a pregnant drummer and the sort of gender clashes that came from that situation, plus everything surrounding the inclusion of Nico in the band’s debut album).
Haynes is an incredible filmmaker who has made some legitimate classics like SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY, SAFE, VELVET GOLDMINE, I’M NOT THERE, and CAROL. His last movie, DARK WATERS, was…not great. But it’s exciting to see what this talented artist (and blatant music lover) will do with his first documentary.
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND will be released on October 15, 2021 via Apple TV+ (I swear they change the name of that platform every month). Information form the press release and a look at the trailer are below:
The Velvet Underground created a new sound that changed the world of music, cementing its place as one of rock ’n’ roll’s most revered bands. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes, “The Velvet Underground” shows just how the group became a cultural touchstone representing a range of contradictions: the band is both of their time, yet timeless; literary yet realistic; rooted in high art and street culture.
The film features in-depth interviews with the key players of that time combined with a treasure trove of never-before-seen performances and a rich collection of recordings, Warhol films, and other experimental art that creates an immersive experience into what founding member John Cale describes as the band's creative ethos: “how to be elegant and how to be brutal.”
