How Stephen King Scares You

Stephen King is synonymous with scary, obviously, and that’s usually the deepest most references and discussions go. Folks will point to Pennywise or some scene from a movie or idea in a book and they’ll act like on its own, these things are terrifying. But they aren’t. This essay from Why It’s Great points out that the ideas themselves aren’t that scary, but they are wrapped up in deeper fears that most people have around mortality, family, society, and more. And that these are presented Trojan Horse style via characters that are common folks with whom many people would interact during their days.

In other words, as Why It’s Great summarizes:

“Stephen King isn't great because he SCARES you. He's great because he KNOWS you.”
