Yeah Yeah Yeahs ft. Perfume Genius
Yeah Yeah Yeahs is one of my favorite bands currently performing and probably of all time. They are a throwback to that odd overlap of Punk and New Wave that occupied the same space in New York City of the 1970s—where The Ramones would perform on the same stage as Talking Heads, or Blondie would appear a couple of nights before New York Dolls at CBGB’s. But that synthesis is contained in one band instead of one playbill, which makes for exciting experiments and signature sounds unique to Karen O, Nick Zinner, and Brian Chase.
So when they released their first single in nine years, I was here for it…if a bit worried. Sometimes dead is better and hibernations can lead to loss of mojo. Luckily, they still got it. The song, “Spitting Off The Edge Of The World,” features Perfume Genius and is off Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ forthcoming album, Cool It Down, out on September 30 (available for pre-order now). Admittedly the opening of the song didn’t dispel my trepidations as it sounds a lot more Perfume Genius than Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Also Zinner and Chase aren’t in the video at first, either. But then the climax hits, the pair show up, and it becomes another great tune by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
And, like all of their music, it comes with a great video full of dope visuals and exciting ideas. This one is directed by Cody Critcheloe, produced by Megan Mantia, with Alex Gvojic as director of photography. Put on some headphones, crank up the volume, and check out the cool video for “Spitting Off The Edge Of The World,” the great new song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, featuring Perfume Genius.
